Alumni Angle: MBA graduate, Andrea Lomanto

Andrea Lomanto currently resides in Voorheesville, NY. She received her BS from Boston University in 2005 followed by an MBA from Saint Rose in 2007. After graduation, Lomanto earned a job on the Saint Rose staff, where she is now Director of Alumni Relations. In her free time she enjoys making jewelry, gardening, attempting to knit, cooking, and traveling. Her favorite movies are anything horror and anything directed by Woody Allen. Meanwhile, she loves to listen to Jeffrey Foucault, The Stray Birds, and M.R. Poulopoulos (her talented boyfriend).

What did you get your degree in? And why did you choose it?

Andrea Lomanto: I chose communications at BU because I wanted to work in advertising, specifically as a copywriter. I was initially attracted to the glamor of advertising. After an eye-opening internship, I saw how not-glamorous and cut throat the environment could be. I didn’t give up on the idea of advertising, though. My first job out of school was with a small ad shop in Schenectady. I found out rather quickly that it wasn’t the Andrea Lomanto Picturecreative outlet I thought it would be. Fortunately, I’d enrolled in the MBA program at Saint Rose to continue on a more general marketing and management path. Another motivating factor for earning my MBA was the shockingly low starting salary for an entry-level advertising employee. I like to think I dodged burnout and bankruptcy!

How did your education at Saint Rose help with your career choice?

AL: I developed lasting relationships with the faculty during my MBA program and appreciated the intimate and nurturing classroom setting. It was a very positive experience for me. During the program, I interned at the Albany Institute of History & Art (AIHA) where I had my first not-for-profit experience. The internship program showed me a new path I hadn’t considered, and that was the world of development. I eventually ended up back at AIHA where I worked in Corporate Development. That position prepared me for my position as Assistant Director of Alumni Relations & Annual Giving. After some department reorganization and a promotion, I’m Director of Alumni Relations today.

Work-family-life balance for MBA students

Many MBA students at Saint Rose work full-time in addition to attending classes on a part-time or even full-time basis. Balancing your various priorities can be stressful as you try to meet commitments at work, school, and home.

According to this mba.com article, “In today’s economic and employment climate, professionals are looking to not only accelerate their career through education but work experience as well. Even aside from career advancement, MBA students generally have busy lives as it is – adding a full course load does not make things any easier.”

MBA students at Saint Rose have flexibility to schedule their classes according to their availability. Many MBA classes are offered in the evening, allowing students to fulfill their work obligations during the day.

The MBA program offers three scheduling options:

Part-Time MBA: The Part-Time MBA program allows students to complete the degree at their own pace. A typical course load for a currently employed student is one to two courses a semester. However, students may enroll in additional courses if they do not have full-time work obligations.

Full-Time MBA: It is possible for students to complete the MBA program in less than two years while still employed. Though a student may take up to five courses in any semester, to retain eligibility for the Graduate Internship, the “full-time” student must maintain a minimum three-course load (9 credits per semester) in each semester enrolled.

One-Year MBA: The One-Year MBA program is designed to be completed in one academic year of full-time study and combines career development opportunities with intensive course work. Students may include an internship as part of this program option. The One-Year MBA begins in August, and students complete the capstone course (MBA 690) and optional internship the following July. Courses may be offered during the day or evening. Because of the intensive nature of the One-Year MBA program, make sure you meet the prerequisites prior to applying.

Here are some perspectives from current Saint Rose MBA students:

“Balancing work, school, and family life can be a challenging task at times. The fact that the College offers many different evening, online, and hybrid courses makes this challenge a much more feasible task. The key for me is making sure I designate certain times throughout the week that are dedicated strictly to my coursework, while making sure I also designate times that are strictly for family and work. I find that if I abide by these rules, I am able to achieve a good work, life, and school balance.” – Kenan Forrester

“Prioritizing and scheduling are probably the two most important factors when it comes to having a work-school-family balance in graduate school.  Planning out a schedule for coursework time is just as important as making sure you schedule time for some fun and relaxation.  One thing that I have found to be helpful in keeping a manageable coursework schedule is before the start of each semester I will usually read the first couple of chapters of the assigned textbook for a course.  Doing so usually helps give you a basic understanding of the topics that will be covered during the quick eleven-week semester and makes for a smoother transition into the workload for the term.” – Megghan Holz

“I couldn’t be happier with the MBA program at Saint Rose. From the fact that Saint Rose is on a trimester schedule, which allows students a way to finish their degree earlier, to offering classes in the evening, it is a very convenient and accessible program. Having a full-time job and trying to juggle classes could be very difficult. However, if you are able to put in the needed time for your classes and studying, it is a program that can work very well for professionals looking to advance their education and careers.” – Robert Moriarty

Meet Dr. Dandan Wu, Assistant Professor of Finance

Dr. Dandan Wu, Assistant Professor of Finance, joined the School of Business faculty at the start of the 2011-2012 academic year.

Dr. Wu earned her Ph.D. from Washington State University and taught corporate finance there before coming to Saint Rose. She is originally from Shenzhen, China, the city where the stock market of China originated.

Dr. Wu began teaching her first graduate level class, Managerial Finance, this Spring 2012 semester. She says that the design of the graduate business programs provides unique flexibility in terms of how a student can complete the degree program. For MBA students, the program can be pursued full-time or part-time, in one or two years of study. The Master of Science in Accounting degree is a 30-credit hour program designed to satisfy certain requirements for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) examination. Both programs offer day and evening classes.

For those interested in pursuing the MBA or MS in Accounting, Dr. Wu suggests that students should adjust their mindset for graduate study. “A graduate student should be more independent and be ready to take initiation in learning. Subjects in business are diverse. One should aim at gaining solid understanding of all of them and also being exceptionally knowledgeable in one subject area,” she explains, “For MBA students, knowing clearly what your subject of interest is will be especially important. Graduate programs can be hectic and knowing what you want to learn about enables you to use your time and energy wisely.”

As a new faculty member, Dr. Wu says the most impressive experience she has had in her seven months at Saint Rose has been observing how dedicated her colleagues are to teaching. “As a newcomer, I am motivated and inspired everyday to work harder to become a good member of the teaching community. I know that this is not the case at all colleges and universities, and I deeply appreciate being in a group of people who are passionate and devoted to education” she says.

Dr. Wu also hopes to share her passion for finance in the classroom. “I always believe that finance is a key piece of knowledge that can reduce the unnatural inequality among people. Therefore, I hope that I will gain more experience with teaching finance and Saint Rose is a perfect place to do that.”

Are you interested in the MBA or MS in Accounting program? Dr. Wu suggests that applicants contact course instructors before beginning the program to ask for advice on how to prepare for courses and familiarize yourself with the resources at Saint Rose and in Albany for graduate students.

The Fall 2012 preferred application deadline for both the MBA and Accounting programs is June 1. If you have any questions about the admissions process, please call Graduate Admissions at 518-454-5143 or email grad@strose.edu.
