How to login to your Saint Rose email, and more!

The College of Saint Rose offers a variety of technology services to our students including email, Blackboard, student account access (“Self Service”), and online file storage.  Sometimes it can be challenging to remember where to find these resources and how to access them.  Here is a short overview of our technology services!  For more complete instructions and information, check out the ITS Student Tech Guide.

Finding your Technology Resources
When you visit the Saint Rose homepage, www.strose.edu, you will see a grey button in the top right corner that says ‘LOGIN’.  Clicking this button will bring you to a page where the College has gathered links to online systems together in one convenient place.  Each resource also has its own URL, listed below.)   Three of the most frequently used resources are Student Email, the Secure Site (where you manage registration, make payments, etc.) and Blackboard (where your professors will provide online resources).  Each is profiled below …

Blackboard
The ITS Student Tech Guide describes Blackboard as “an electronic course management system used by course instructors to enhance communication, organization and presentation in a course. Blackboard can be used for web-enhanced courses, hybrid courses, and totally web-based courses, or e-Learning courses. If your professor uses Blackboard, you should see the course link on the Courses page after logging into Blackboard. Blackboard also houses electronic resources for College offices, and College sponsored community groups.”  Blackboard can also be accessed at blackboard.strose.edu.

Your Blackboard username and password is also used for email, lab computers, wireless network and more.   If your last name is hyphenated, the latter name will be used.

Username: Last name + first initial of your first name + last 3 digits of your student ID #.
Password: Your birthday (MMDDYY)

Student Email
The College uses Google Apps for student email services.  This gives students the ability to use Docs, Calendar, and Chat apps through their student account.  Your student email address will follow the same equation used for your Blackboard username and add @strose.edu to the end.  The username and password for your e-mail is the same as the Blackboard information above.  Student e-mail can also be accessed at mymail.strose.edu.

Secure Site
The College offers online access to student account and registration information through the Secure Site.  You may also hear this referred to as BannerWeb.  “BannerWeb allows students to view and update personal information, and perform administrative functions related to course registration, grading, transcripts, financial aid, and account status” (ITS Student Tech Guide,  p. 12).  Secure Site can also be accessed at bannerweb.strose.edu.

Your login for the Secure Site is different from that of your email and Blackboard.
User ID: Your Saint Rose ID number (9-digit)
PIN: Your birthday (MMDDYY)

Password Policy
The first time you login to your email, Blackboard, or a campus computer, you will be prompted to update your password.  There are specific complexity requirements, so read them below and be prepared when you login!

All users must have a password that includes the following elements:
1. It cannot contain significant portions of the user’s account name or full name
2. It must be at least eight characters in length
3. It must contain characters from three of the following four categories:

  • Uppercase characters (A through Z)
  • Lowercase characters (a through z)
  • Numbers (0 through 9)
  • Non-alphabetic characters (for example, !, $, #, %)

Admissions Advice: Social media and your graduate application

When planning for graduate school, you may not think much about your online identity.  However, for years employment counselors have been advising job seekers to review their social media presence during a job search.  The same principles apply to you as you seek admission to a master’s program or advanced certificate.

Just how are graduate admission and social media connected?  It starts with your email address.  This is how The College of Saint Rose will communicate with you throughout the admissions and review period.  If you are using the same email you’ve had since you were 13, it may not be very professional.  Anything with “cute” abbreviations or quirky spelling (“gurl” instead “girl,” for example) should be out.  And the same applies to anything with a sexual or racial innuendo.  Try to look at your email address with fresh eyes.  It may be time to create a boring but professional address that is clearly yours.  Use any free service and make sure your name is part of the address.

Overall, it’s unlikely that your social media presence will influence your graduate application, but things are changing quickly.  According to Kaplan Test Prep, between 2010 and 2011 many schools developed guidelines prohibiting admission staff from visiting applicants’ social media profiles.  But, the 2011 Kaplan survey also revealed that although few admission officers review social media sites, some did reject applications because of what they saw online.

If faculty or admission staff do look you up online, what will they see?  To find out, search for your name on Google and other search engines.  Make sure your Facebook settings prohibit non-friends from viewing your profile. Conversely, use your LinkedIn to enhance your resume by adding relevant details, such as recommendations from colleagues and supervisors, groups you belong to, and books you’re reading (especially if they are relevant to your academic goals).

If you maintain a blog related to your intended master’s program, include the link on your resume and LinkedIn page.  If you have a photo-sharing profile or a personal blog, with random musings on your life and the state of the world, you may want to institute privacy settings.

As with all things connected to your application, make sure that you accentuate the elements of your social media presence that reflect well on you as a potential graduate student.  Everything else should be deemphasized or even taken down if it would put your admission into question.

Do you have other questions about how to enhance your graduate application? You call the Office of Graduate Admissions at 518-454-5143 or email grad@strose.edu.
